India is all set to migrate to 3G networks. BSNL has already offered 3G service to their customers. The Indian common public is enjoying 3G services through BSNL. For availing BSNL 3G service one have to get a new 3G SIM card that is available for free now. From the Diwali this year the Tata Docomo also offered 3G service to all their customers. Customers can use their existing SIM Card and they don’t have to change the SIM Cards to receive 3G Service. IDEA has won 3G spectrum license in 11 circles and expected to roll out 3G services in first quarter of 2011.The operator is also campaigning about MNP or Mobile Number Portability. No tariffs or exact launch date yet from Sir Ji ! Aircel users might have to wait till 2011 to experience 3G . But January 2011 is not too far away. Aircel recently launched 3G experience zones in Chennai.

If a transformer breaker trips with bucholz relay action, the transformer should not be charged before conducting detailed investigation. The high voltage and low voltage sides of the transformer should be isolated. DC supply to and from Bucholz relay is also to be isolated. The gas collected in the Bucholz relay has to be tested as detailed below.
- Examine Bucholz relay.
- Note and record the quality and colour of gas collected. A colour less accumulation usually indicates the presence of air.
- Release a small quantity of gas and smell. Peculiar smell other than oil smell is not desirable.
- Prepare silver nitrate solution of any concentration in a oil bottle (the solution must be clear).
- Allow some quantity of gas to bubble through this clear solution of silver nitrate.
- If there is no change in the colour of the solution, it generally indicates that the gas is merely air. Whitish precipitation-decomposition of paper. Yellow precipitation-decomposition of wood. deep grey-gas of over heated oil due to burning of iron. Black-gas of decomposed oil due to electric arc.
- If a precipitate is obtained, thorough examination of the transformer should be made at the earliest opportunity.

The fundamental theory of the battery is that a voltage is developed between two electrodes of dissimilar metal when they are immersed in an electrolyte. In the typical lead-acid cell the generated voltage is 2.1 volts. A typical 12 volt Lead Acid Battery consists of 6 cells with Lead Dioxide (Positive Plate), Sponge Lead (negative plate) and Sulphuric Acid (H2S04) - electrolyte. In a normal discharge operation the lead reacts with sulphuric acid and become lead sulphate and water. This dilutes electrolyte. During a charging operation the reverse process take place. Lithium air cells have higher energy mass than lithium ion cells because of the lighter cathode and the fact that oxygen is freely available in the environment and does not need to be stored in the battery. It is considered that Lithium air batteries are three times better. With oxygen as an unlimited cathode reactant, the capacity of the battery is limited by the Li anode. Stanford scientists have invented a new source of electric energy production from a process that is very similar to photosynthesis, a plant's method of converting sunlight to chemical energy. It may be a first step toward generating "high efficiency" bioelectricity that doesn't give off carbon dioxide as a by-product. The scientists developed an unique, ultra-sharp nanoelectrode made of gold, and gently pushed it through the algal cell membranes. From the photosynthesizing cells, the electrode collected electrons that had been energized by light and the researchers generated a tiny electric current. This can developed to a considerable quantity of electric power and in future can be used to generate electric power for the portable electric equipments and later will be a solution for the energy crisis we face.
Stanford engineers have generated electrical current by tapping into the electron activity in individual algae cells. This may be the first step toward carbon-free electricity directly from plants. The severity of electric shock depends on the voltage and the path over which the current flows. If electric shock is mild, you will just feel tingling sensation, but severe one can cause a burn, respiratory depression, heart damage, and death at the worst. The resistance of human skin is around 5kW when it is dry and the voltage is 100V. It is around 2kW when it is wet. The body resistance is around 300W. If coming in contact with the voltage of 100V when the skin is wet, 22mA of current will flow through the human body and you cannot let go of it on your own. That is why you should avoid working with wet hands.

Electrical System Protection is a very important field of study. Most of the design engineers find it difficult to protect their equipments from voltage surges, power breakers, fluctuations etc. There are several standard projections used for electrical power systems. The basic protection systems are Overload Protection, Under voltage Protection, Overvoltage Protection, Phase Failure Protection, Phase Sequence Reversal Protection. The first one that is Overload or over current protection is sufficient for majority or equipments. A simple schematic is given in the figure.
